For almost ten years, one man was at the top of every country's most-wanted list. Osama bin Laden was the leader of a group called al-Qaeda. His group had attacked the United States on September 11, 2001, killing nearly 3,000 people. After that terrible day, the United States launched a massive search. Thousands of soldiers and intelligence officers worked to find him. Bin Laden hid for years, moving between remote areas near the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Then a clue appeared. American investigators tracked a messenger who worked for bin Laden. The messenger led them to a large house in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The house had tall walls, barbed wire, and no internet or phone lines. It looked like someone was hiding inside. On May 2, 2011, a team of U.S. Navy SEALs flew by helicopter to the house under cover of darkness. The raid lasted about forty minutes. Bin Laden was found inside and killed during the operation. President Obama announced the news that same night. The mission showed how years of detective work and careful planning could track down even the most hidden person in the world.
