What would you write in a diary if you had to stay hidden for two years? On June 12, 1942, Anne Frank turned thirteen. She received a red-and-white checkered diary as a birthday gift. Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. World War II was raging across Europe, and the Nazi government was persecuting Jewish families like hers. Just weeks after her birthday, Anne's family went into hiding. They moved into secret rooms above her father's office building. Anne called their hiding place the Secret Annex. For over two years, eight people lived together in those cramped rooms. They could not go outside. They had to be silent during the day so workers below would not hear them. Anne filled her diary with her thoughts, dreams, and fears. She wrote about arguments with her mother and her crush on a boy named Peter. She also wrote about wanting to become a journalist or a famous writer. In August 1944, the hiding place was discovered. Anne and her family were arrested. Sadly, Anne died in a camp in 1945. She was only fifteen. After the war, Anne's father Otto was the only family member who survived. He found Anne's diary and published it. The book has been translated into over 70 languages.
