Karl Marx, born on May 5, 1818, in the German city of Trier, became one of the most influential writers in history. His most famous work, The Communist Manifesto, was only about forty pages long. Yet those forty pages changed the course of nations. Marx was a philosopher and writer who studied how economies work. He noticed that factory owners grew wealthy while their workers lived in poverty. Workers spent long hours in dangerous conditions for very low pay. Marx believed this system was unfair and would eventually break down. In 1848, Marx and his friend Friedrich Engels published The Communist Manifesto. The book argued that workers should unite and take control of the resources they helped create. It ended with a famous line: "Workers of the world, unite!" The Manifesto spread quickly across Europe. It inspired political movements in dozens of countries. In 1917, Russian revolutionaries used Marx's ideas to create the Soviet Union. Critics said his ideas led to governments that took away freedom. Supporters said he gave a voice to millions of poor workers. His writing proves that words can reshape the world.
