Elton John, born Reginald Dwight on March 25, 1947, in Pinner, England, grew up to become one of the most successful musicians ever. He began playing piano at age three and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age 11. Despite his talent, young Reginald was shy. He later changed his name to Elton John and created a bold stage persona to overcome his shyness. His costumes became legendary. He wore sequined jumpsuits, feathered hats, and oversized glasses shaped like stars, pianos, and even the Eiffel Tower. His partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin became one of the most productive songwriting teams in pop music history. Taupin wrote the words, and Elton composed the music, often writing a melody in less than an hour. Together they created hits like "Crocodile Rock," "Rocket Man," and "Tiny Dancer." Elton also wrote the music for Disney's The Lion King, including the songs "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." He has sold over 300 million records worldwide. In 2018, he began his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, a three-year journey across the globe to thank his fans.
